By deriving these networks of relations among these objects and their physical properties, the functions of the objects are transformed in a manner that allows the goal (turning the screw) to be achieved. The functions of the toothbrush changed to be focused on its meltability and its pliability. The functions of the lighter changed to be focused on its ability to melt plastic. In the proper sequence, these functions combine to give the toothbrush the entirely new function of screw-turning. Problem solved!
