RFT provides a framework for an analysis of complex human behavior that serves as the basis of promising new interventions in applied behavior analysis or ABA (e.g., PEAK Relational Training System) and clinical psychology (e.g., Acceptance and Commitment Therapy). Skinner published the book Verbal Behavior. In 1959, a young linguist named Noam Chomsky published a review of that book that sharply criticized Skinner's behaviorism in general and his behavioral approach to language acquisition in particular. The debate between the pragmatism of Skinner and the structuralism of Chomsky continues to this day. Now hear directly from both men, in a series of archival interviews and speeches spanning several decades, as they address the philosophical and practical differences between their approaches. Selecting, Confirming, and Maintaining an Alternative Method of Speaking for Non-Verbal Children and Adults Patrick McGreevy Many non-verbal children grow into adults without an effective alternative communication method, despite some being taught to use picture exchanges, voice-output electronic devices, or sign language. Often, these alternative methods… Show more (+) Many non-verbal children grow into adults without an effective alternative communication method, despite some being taught to use picture exchanges, voice-output electronic devices, or sign language. Often, these alternative methods are abandoned for more portable and equipment-free methods like informal gestures. This presentation from the 2016 Michigan Autism Conference presenter discusses procedures for selecting and testing the effectiveness of alternative communication methods. It introduces the Verbal Behavior Milestones Assessment and Placement Program (VB-MAPP) as an effective tool for assessing these skills, based on B.F. Skinner's analysis of verbal behavior and developmental milestones. Show less (-) BCBA CEUs: 1 | ||

Students with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) face particular challenges due to social differences, potentially leading to academic struggles, peer conflicts, loneliness, and missed opportunities for future success. This presentation from the 2019 Michigan Autism Conference discusses research findings and lessons from recent efforts to assess and address the social deficits of college students with ASD. This may be due to difficulties in benefiting from generative learning, where existing skills facilitate the acquisition of new ones without direct teaching. Strategies for helping children with autism harness the power of generative learning, identified through milestones in the VB-MAPP assessment, are discussed in this presentation from the 2020 Michigan Autism Conference. This presentation from the 2019 Michigan Autism Conference explores how the mand's occurrence, shaped by various discriminative stimuli (SDs), allows for its generalization across different MOs and SDs, and how the same MO can lead to new mand topographies. Evaluating the Reliability and Sensitivity of the VB-MAPP as an Outcome Measure in Autism Research Amin Lotfizadeh & Khrystle Montallana This study, presented at the 2019 Michigan Autism Conference, explored the inter-rater reliability of the VB-MAPP, a widely used assessment and curriculum guide in autism interventions, and tested its effectiveness… Show more (+) This study, presented at the 2019 Michigan Autism Conference, explored the inter-rater reliability of the VB-MAPP, a widely used assessment and curriculum guide in autism interventions, and tested its effectiveness as an outcome measure for low-intensity behavioral interventions. The findings show good reliability for milestones and moderate reliability for barriers, with some variability in individual domains. When compared to the Vineland Adaptive Behavior Scale, the VB-MAPP demonstrated a greater sensitivity to detecting gains from low-dosage interventions.
