1 Supervision CEUImmediate Feedback: A Misconception of a Recommended Practice
Elian Aljadeff4.50 out of 5(12)Feedback is widely used to enhance performance, but its definition lacks clarity in the literature, leading to misconceptions such as immediate feedback being more effective than delayed feedback and feedback being a consequence of behavior. This presentation from the 2021 Michigan Autism Conference aims to address these misconceptions by discussing feedback’s function as an antecedent to behavior and proposing a clearer definition in line with applied behavior analysis principles.

Treating Food Selectivity as Resistance to Change
Kathryn M. Peterson & Cathleen C. Piazza4.54 out of 5(13)In this study, presented at the 2021 Michigan Autism Conference, a matching-law-based intervention was employed to address change-resistant feeding behavior in seven young children with autism. Participants were offered a choice between their preferred food and an alternative during free- and asymmetrical-choice conditions. Alternative-food consumption increased for participants through various strategies. Results demonstrate the effectiveness of teaching children to consume alternative foods even when their preferred options are available.

1 Ethics CEUConceptualizing Self-Determination from a Behavior Analytic Perspective
Stephanie Peterson4.40 out of 5(5)The common educational goal of fostering self-determination in individuals can pose a challenge for behavior analysts due to its abstract nature, making it hard to define, observe, and measure. However, by conceptualizing self-determination through tangible behaviors associated with choice, self-control, and self-management, it becomes possible to operationalize and teach these skills. This approach allows behavior analysts to collaborate more effectively with other service providers. This presentation from the 2021 Michigan Autism Conference delves into these concepts.

Assessment and Treatment of Problem Behaviors within an Outpatient Clinic
Kristen Kalymon5.00 out of 5(1)BCBA ethical codes require functional assessments before treatment implementation, yet practitioners face barriers for conducting experimental functional analyses. Descriptive methods like Antecedent-Behavior-Consequence (ABC) assessments offer practical alternatives. Additionally, decision-making algorithms help practitioners select appropriate treatments by considering client goals, needs, and environmental limitations. This presentation from the 2021 Michigan Autism Conference discusses the clinical use of descriptive assessments and decision-making algorithms in outpatient settings.

Training Providers to Conduct Trial-Based Functional Analysis
Mandy Rispoli3.67 out of 5(3)Behavioral interventions stemming from a FBA are more effective than those not function-related, with the quality of FBAs positively correlating with student outcomes. Trial-based functional analysis (TBFA) can efficiently confirm FBA results, enhancing the effectiveness of function-based interventions, and training school personnel and ABA providers in systematic TBFA can enhance school capacity to assess challenging behaviors. This session from the 2021 Michigan Autism Conference illustrates a model for preparing service providers to conduct TBFA, supported by data from single-case design studies.

An Examination of Linear and Ratio Graphs
Richard M. Kubina Jr.4.67 out of 5(3)Line graphs have long been crucial in applied behavior analysis for visually representing treatment data and summarizing behavioral performance over time. However, issues such as low interrater reliability and the absence of consistent decision-making criteria have been noted. An alternative, the standard ratio graph, is explored in this presentation from the 2021 Michigan Autism Conference for its potential to address these criticisms by comparing its effectiveness against traditional linear graphs in an experiment.
