Abstract

Siegfried “Zig” Engelmann devoted his life to developing and refining Direct Instruction (DI), a powerful teaching system that combines logical analysis of the content students are to learn, thoughtful selection and sequencing of instructional examples, clear communication between teacher and student, high rates of active student responding, reinforcement and corrective feedback, practice to mastery, and judicious review. What follows is based on a transcript from an audio cassette recording the 90-min telephone discussion with Professor Engelmann on November 19, 1992. Never one to be shy or coy, he pulled no punches and called it as he saw it.
